Today is a historic day for the HIV/AIDS community. Almost thirty years after the first reported case of HIV/AIDS in the United States, the White House and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebilius will unveil the nation’s first National HIV/AIDS Strategy. The unveiling of this strategy provides the United States with the first comprehensive plan for combating HIV/AIDS. The Obama Administration committed to developing a National HIV/AIDS Strategy with three primary goals: 1) reducing the number of people who become infected with HIV, 2) increasing access to care and optimizing health outcomes for people living with HIV, and 3) reducing HIV-related health disparities. The Strategy serves as a catalyst for all levels of governments, communities, and stakeholders to work together and coordinate their efforts to implement activities for achieving the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. The vision for the Strategy is that “The United States will become a place where new HIV infections are rare and when they do occur, every person, regardless of age, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or socio-economic circumstance, will have unfettered access to high quality, life-extending care, free from stigma and discrimination”.
This is a monumental moment in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Take part in this historic event by watching the live presentation of the plan from the White House online at WhiteHouse.gov/live at 2:00 p.m. ET.
