The Department recently hosted the first SOS: Sistas Organizing to Survive conference in Orlando, FL to address the HIV/AIDS crisis among Florida’s women. What are some strategies that individuals and communities can use to reach Florida’s women - particularly African American women?

I must say I was truly amazed at the S.O.S. conference. I enojoyed just being in the presence of so many beautiful black/latino & white women standing together united to help fight hiv/aids in our comunities. This conference was long over due and I know the conference in 2009 is going to be even better. But I must say my biggest concern is that what we learned from the conference we all take it to heart and we become movers and shakes in our communities and be active in making changes. That we are women who network with other agencies in our local areas and a broad. DO!NOT!! be those people who “talk” about what needs to be done. CHANGES THAT ARE NEEDED TO BE MADE FIRST STARTS WITH EACH OTHER. Remember WE need EACH OTHER to survive.

I plan to change the signature line on my email account. That way everytime I send an email my friends will be reminded of how important it is to be tested. It’s that easy to mobilize and encourage testing.

Shortly after leaving the phenomenal conference, I immediately began to give out the pledge cards, keychains and brochures. Within two days…. I was OUT!! My sister, my aunt and my two best friends, I gave them each one then challenged them to give one a sista they knew. Spread the love right?? It worked because my aunt then called me wanting me to get more so she could give them to a girl doing a nursing class at the local college! YIKES!!! LOL. 2010 is going to exceed their goal - NO DOUBT!
Also, my MOM… (GOD LOVE HER) is doing a blog on how it is to be a parent with a HIV+ child (ME). That inspires me even more for her to give her testimony.
I just have to give thanks to God and to the Department of Health for initiating this.
A change is GONNA come!

This conference was very spiritual and up lifting to alot of us that attended this event that were positive I have lived with HIV for 23 yrs and meeting others who have lived as many was a blessing. I know that I am not alone on my journey that has been set before by educating people and stop the spread of HIV and for those who have been infected how to live with it. I took the pledge with tears of strength flowing from my eyes and my heart was filled with Love. I know we can stop HIV in this lifetime. For I walk by faith and not by sight alone

LadyCycleRiders of Central Florida are asking women to take the pledge to educate and encourage black women to be tested where you live, work, play, and worship. Because of their efforts Central Florida lead the state with online pledge.
The members of the LadyCycleRiders Motorcycle Club of Central Florida would like for you to join us in the fight against HIV/AIDS, a disease that is devastating our lives and our community. It has always been a part of the LadyCycleRiders mission to support and raise the awareness of women’s health issues along with our love of motorcycle riding and providing rider safety education.
In June, the Sistas Organizing to Survive (S.O.S.) Conference, hosted by the FL Department of Health, Bureau of HIV/AIDS was held in Orlando . S.O.S. is a grassroots mobilization of Black women in the fight against HIV and AIDS. For 15 consecutive years, HIV/AIDS has been the leading cause of death of Black women aged 25-44 in the state of Florida . In Florida , one in 68 non-Hispanic Black women are known to be living with HIV/AIDS. This compares with approximately one in 1,281 non-Hispanic White women, and one in 472 Hispanic women. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. and Florida impacts all racial/ethnic groups of women in unacceptable ways. So, we must join in this fight together.
At the end of the conference, participants were asked to encourage women, especially Black women to get tested for HIV and STDs and to pledge to educate others where they live, work, play, and worship. This email is how the members of the LadyCycleRiders have chosen to get the word out and encourage our friends and family in Central Florida to take the pledge.
The LadyCycleRiders are asking you to go to our website www.ladycycleriders.com, “click” on the S.O.S. icon, that will take you to the We Make the Change website and “Take the Pledge” by midnight August 31st.
Then, take one more minute and email ladycycleriders@yahoo.com. Let us know that you took the pledge, provide us a mailing address and as a special thanks, the LadyCycleriders will send you a special S.O.S. gift (by snail mail) as our thank you for taking action. You will then be entered in a drawing to be held September 6th to win one of the following prizes:

Hello to all,
I had such a great time in Orlando with Mother Mac! Remember ladies! Take charge of your lives and those condoms, spice it up and take no more excuses! We need you to survive! USE CONDOMS and share the facts, the truth, and the sisterhood is strong!
