Hi Veronica - and anyone else out there who wants to get tested in Broward County… you can / as long as you are at least 12 years old (no moms, dads, grandma’s needed…). You can call 754-368-8049 and speak with Miss Audrey. She’ll tell you where she is in the community testing and you can meet her and get tested. We are also going to be at Jack and Jill Children’s Center (right in 33311) this Tuesday at 6:30. Come and visit - I’ll be there (Kim).
Holy Cross Hospital does rapid tests and your result is given to you in 20 minutes!!!! Call us or come see us - bring a friend… and remember, it’s better to know!
You can get tested anywhere in the state of Florida not just at the place mentioned. You should check with the health department in your area they can test you for everything.
What a great question! It shows you are thinking about HIV - something we appreciate. With HIV transmission, there are the 3 ways of transmission. Having sex with an infected person, sharing needles for whatever reason with an infected person, or mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy or after birth through infected breast milk. A blood transfusion also can pose some risk, but all blood products in the United States are now screened for HIV so a blood transfusion is this country poses very little risk.
The Centers for Disease Control also recommends that individuals not share razors, toothbrushes, or other personal items. These items may pose a low risk of exposure to HIV. It has been theorized that a person may come into contact with fresh (not-dried) blood on the surface of the item through a cut or break in their own skin. If blood or semen has dried, the risk for infection becomes less.
Because it is impossible to tell if someone has been infected just by looking at them, we recommend that everyone have an HIV test as part of their routine yearly health check-up. While your risk of exposure even if your grandmother is infected is very low, this is a great opportunity for you to take this important, proactive step for your health. The only way to know if you have HIV is to take the test! Exposure might come from a razor, but it also could be from getting a tattoo or a piercing if the equipment has been infected or having sex of any kind while under the influence of drugs or alcohol - a time when you are much less likely to use a condom. It is confidential, can be painless (no needles!) and it is possible to get your results in 20 minutes. Send a text to 477493 for the testing site near you.
