Community involvement is an important part of HIV prevention. When we invest time into the places where we live, we create a valuable support system for ourselves and others. Be a part of your community's efforts to improve quality of life for those living there; make your actions speak louder than words.

The Florida Department of Health has partnered with faith leaders throughout Florida’s minority communities to perform HIV testing and education within the church. We’ve made incredible progress over the last year and are proud of Florida’s accomplishments.
African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC) Initiative
Leadership: Bishop McKinley Young, Bishop of the 11th Episcopal DistrictThe AMEC Testing Initiative is a partnership between the Bureau of HIV/AIDS and AMEC to identify one AMEC in every county in the state of Florida as an HIV testing site or test location.
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) Initiative
Leadership: Art Rocker, Representative of the Florida SCLC ConsortiumThe SCLC is a partner with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative. The Bureau of HIV/AIDS has partnered with the SCLC to assist with the Silence Is Sinful Initiative.
General Baptist State Convention
Leadership: President Henry J. LyonsThe General Baptist State Convention has implemented an initiative to establish an HIV ministry with EVERY church affiliated with the association. The convention has a funded organization, FAITH Inc., that provides training and capacity building assistance for members of the General Baptist State Convention and non-members.
Florida has created fans, palm cards, bookmarks and bulletins for faith organizations to use in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness. All materials were reviewed and approved by the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Faith Advisory Committee.
The Department of Health will work closely with faith leaders to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS in the faith community, reduce the stigma associated with HIV and AIDS within the church and promote the importance of HIV testing and knowing your HIV status. We Make the Change uses community faith-based events as new avenues for HIV education. Local HIV prevention teams participate in church conferences, concerts, and other events throughout the state.
